Nobody cares

Nobody reads the warnings on cigarette packs. "Smoking kills" is printed on every box, giant, and it hasn't stopped anyone. The truth is right there, in plain sight, and we bypass it just to light up.

I spent years working in advertising for tobacco companies. Most of that work never saw the light of day. It was like inflating a balloon that wouldn't stop growing but never popped either. Producing and producing to sustain something when you already knew exactly what it was on the inside.

So I took the packs and changed the warnings. Where the unread words used to be, I put other sentences. Truths we all know and also ignore. That the church lies. That war kills. That preventing women from reaching important leadership roles makes us all more mediocre. That preaching that sex is a sin manufactures hypocrisy. Ten phrases that nobody would dispute out loud, and that nobody pays attention to.

There are ten of them, like the deadly sins. But there could be hundreds. The list never ends.

I started out wanting to point out the tobacco lie. I wanted out of there; I couldn't keep working for that. And while I was doing it, I realized something worse. The tobacco lie wasn't the exception. Whichever way I looked, it was all pretty much the same. The warning nobody reads wasn't just on the cigarette pack. It was everywhere.

That’s why it’s not called "Tobacco Lies." It's called Nobody Cares. We scream the truths out loud and keep doing the exact same thing. The box warns you that you are killing yourself, and you open it anyway.
